Print Handling

Unrolling a fine art giclée print requires careful handling to avoid damage to the print. If you are having the print professionally framed or mounted it is suggested that it be brought straight to the framer. When handling the print follow these recommendations.

Prepare a Clean, Flat Surface: Find a clean, flat surface large enough to accommodate the unrolled print without any risk of it getting damaged or soiled.

Gather Necessary Supplies and Prepare area: Clean gloves (latex or nitrile recommended), and a clean, flat, smooth surface larger than the print. All prints are shipped with glassine paper and acid free kraft paper. Use these when unrolling to protect the print.

Wash Hands and Wear Gloves: To prevent transferring oils or dirt to the print, wash your hands thoroughly and ideally wear clean gloves before handling.

Remove the belly band Securing the rolled print.
Unroll the Print Carefully. Lay the rolled print on the clean surface. Start unrolling the print slowly and gently, taking care not to crease or bend the paper. If the print has been rolled for a long time, it may resist unrolling. In such cases, allow it to rest for a while at room temperature to soften before proceeding.

Support the Print as it Unrolls. As you unroll the print, support it evenly along its length to prevent it from curling or flopping over abruptly.

With the Glassine still covering the print books or other clean, smooth and heavy objects can be placed on the glassine to assist in the flattening. Never place objects directly on the print. Print may take anywhere from a few hours to a full day to flatten completely depending on size and amount of time in roll.

Inspect for Damage. Once unrolled, inspect the print carefully for any signs of damage such as creases, tears, or smudges. If you notice any damage, handle the print with extreme care to avoid exacerbating the issue. Do not try to remove dust or debris with your hands or by using your breath. Use a air dust blower or lens brush.

Store the Print Properly. Once the print is unrolled and flattened, store it in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and humidity. Consider storing it flat in a protective sleeve or portfolio to prevent damage during handling and storage.

By following these steps carefully, you can safely unroll and flatten a fine art giclée print without risking damage to the artwork. Remember to handle the print with care and take appropriate precautions to preserve its integrity.
